Ship mobile

In New England, traditional restaurants and public spaces in maritime communities often display hand-carved half-models of sailing ships, or ship models in showcases.
Faulkner & Locke, art consultants of the Hyatt Place Boston/ Seaport Hotel, took a much less traditional approach to the maritime art pieces that decorate its public spaces.

Arriving visitors are greeted by this large sculpture suspended above the grand lobby staircase. The sculpture is a deconstructed view of a container ship’s multiple levels, naval architectural drawings brought to life.

Outdoor Classrooms - Part I

This is Part I on our experience working with schools to create solutions for outdoor classrooms. Stay tuned for Part II:  Outdoor Classrooms for Portland Schools.

Transformit was asked to provide quotes for dozens of outdoor classrooms to be used at a public school in Maine. The Cares Act had provided the township with a budget to work with, and they needed to research the best places to invest their resources. Cindy and Tom came out the next day to spend two hours walking the Elementary, Middle, and High School combined campus. It was a hot day, and you could certainly understand that the students would need shade in order to concentrate and even see their laptops. There were many wonderful ideas and requests for us to consider:

Making PPE with our Neighbors

When the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospitals and health care facilities became apparent, we began reaching out to our peers in the fabrics industry, to state officials, and to local hospitals to see how our fabric design and fabrication resources could help create personal protective equipment (PPE). As it turns out, our search led us just up the road to our neighbors, Flowfold.

This is Leslie
This is Leslie. Leslie is normally busy being the Vice President of Transformit but these days she and a number of other Transformit employees have set aside their 'normal' tasks to help our neighbors at Flowfold make face shields for the essential health care workers who are on the front lines of this fight against COVID-19.

Under the Microscope at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History

UMMNH IMG_9530 horiz

Look through a microscope at a slide of cells and behold the tiny, almost innumerable micro-organisms bumping around together in a soup of life. Now imagine yourself in the midst of those cells, in that world under the microscope, shrunk down to cellular size, walking around in a seemingly infinite landscape of cellular structures. This is the experience you can have in the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History’s new exhibit, Under the Microscope.

Hollywood Arches for the Art Directors Guild

Hollywood Arches ADG Awards 1.jpg

There’s nothing quite like telling a story on the big screen. It’s the visual artists of the Art Directors Guild (ADG) who, in consultation primarily with the director, create and develop the overall look, visual atmosphere, and emotion that move the story. Fittingly, when the members of the ADG gather for their own awards show, the ADG’s Excellence in Production Design Awards, they want a stage design that speaks “Hollywood.”

Cownose Rays at the Newport Aquarium

Cownose Rays 4 original.jpg

Several years ago we did a really fun project with the Newport Aquarium in Newport, Kentucky. They were renovating the viewing theater for their giant shark-tank, Shark Ray Bay, and invited Transformit to create a fabric surround to frame the large acryllic window into the tank. I like to think our designers were channelling their inner Neptune when they framed the tank window with a dynamic "splash."

When the aquarium was designing their latest exhibit, Stingray Hideaway, they wanted an overhead shade structure that tied in thematically to the exhibit. We were delighted when the Newport Aquarium called us to work with them again and collaborate on their idea. For Stingray Hideaway we created a custom fabric sculpture of sixteen Cownose Rays swimming in a school overhead. Each ray measures six feet long by eight feet wide and one foot tall, the completed piece is 34’ long by 29’ wide by 10’ high and its installation overhead rises from 15’ to 25’ above the floor.
