Always the River celebrates the Cumberland River in Clarksville, TN, a vital ecosystem that supports over 2,000 endangered species. In the installation, Cynthia Thompson, MFA, represents the river (and twenty “cosmic helpers”, protectors of endangered species) using tension-fabric sculpture, animated motion video, painted mural, and theatrical lighting.

Art, and an artist, made Transformit

Transformit was founded in 1987 by sculptor Cynthia Thompson to produce her large-scale art installations and architectural fabric structures. Now the company also offers over 100 large sculptural shapes, for rent or quickly made to order, and put to many uses by architects, interior designers, event and stage producers, and museum and corporate exhibit designers and producers. Customers also ask us to make their custom designs, affordably. This helps us stay at the forefront of innovation.

With Always the River, Transformit Makes Art in a New Way

Recent Transformit museum and interior design projects have involved developing and learning new and exciting capabilities, materials, and techniques. For Always the River, Cindy was determined to make a sculpture that could change and adapt and develop over time. 

The current version of Always the River uses a mirror-head video projector, combined with twenty unique animated 'cosmic helpers', to bring the endangered species to life in the room. Combined with a dramatic theatrical light show, this may be the only such art installation in the United States.
