Flying Ribbons

Midway through the canopy disks project (see previous article), Guildford Town Centre's architect, MCM Interiors, contacted us to explore creating new elements for two areas of the mall. Another contractor had placed a mockup of a metal mesh curtain for approval, but it was rejected because it lacked the WOW! factor they were seeking. The designer's vision was a continuous fabric ribbon flying through the air overhead.

Working from a physical model, our design team figured out how to make the shape true to the model, and how to build two ribbons, each piece more than 200 feet long. Our installation team then figured out how to assemble and suspend the pieces overhead, without disturbing existing structures.

All this took only four months from start to finish, including the 30' long approval mockup we made and installed.
