Fear No Art

by Cindy Thompson

Recently Paul LePage, Maine's new governor, ordered the removal of public art from the State Department of Labor's headquarters.  Painted in 2008 by Judy Taylor, the mural depicts important events and people in Maine's labor history.  Our governor thinks the mural offends business people.   As a business owner and artist, mother, daughter, patriot, coworker, and leader, my position is the same: I support labor My employees are essential; treating them with respect is in everyone's interest.  I oppose censorship Dissent and disagreement are inevitable and necessary in any creative process.  I love art that is political My mission, Transformit's mission, however political, is beauty and sustainability.  I want to make the world more humane and beautiful, with the smallest possible eco-footprint.  I believe that to be truly sustainable we must serve more than mere survival.  If we are surviving, but just barely, why are we here?  Art sustains the best part of us.
