Ocean Gateway Visitor's Center

…or is it Transformit's long-awaited showroom? We've dreamed of building a space near our shop to display our work, but hit on a more sustainable idea: Transformit and the Greater Portland Convention & Visitors Bureau have teamed up to create an exuberant artistic entry portal into Maine and the city or Portland. Ocean Gateway is the terminal for cruise ships visiting Portland: everyone going ashore goes through the visitor's center because luggage and security screening are there.

Cindy, the President of Transformit, was given carte blanche with the design, and access to the entire overhead area of the center.

"The impression I want to give is that (Maine is) a place of beauty, and here is a big "wow!" when passengers come in."

Double and triple-stacked Dazzles, single Dazzles and Morning Glories are the pieces Cindy suspended overhead. Prior to the installation, the building had almost no soft surfaces. The quieting effect of the fabric was immediately noticed by volunteers who before had found it difficult to understand one another, even when face-to-face.

"When we were nearly done installing, a woman came up and asked, 'Are you the artist that did this?' I said I was, and we talked for a bit. Then she said, 'This is the highlight of my vacation- watching this go up, and meeting you, and seeing the end result.' So I got my wish!"
